Day 20 – Can You Learn to Love Something You Hate?
I often wonder if you actually invest the time, can you condition yourself to love something you hate? Maybe you hate vegetables, but you know they’re good for you, so you put the effort in to finding recipes you actually enjoy instead of forcing them down with a grimace. As someone who is on a mini quest to fall a little more in love with my life, I’ve decided to try to love something I hate.
Running and I have never gotten along. Those days in high school P.E. when we had to hit the track were my least favorite. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been of firm mind that you should only run when being chased. (Or growing up as a tennis player, when you’re chasing down a ball.) I get shin splints, I don’t know how to breathe properly to avoid side cramps, and I have a less than perfect knee from aforementioned tennis and dance. But damn it, I’m going to try my hardest to learn to love running. I’m not on an crazy kick, and running a marathon has never been (nor will it ever be) on my bucket list. My goal is simply to be able to jump on the treadmill for 20 minutes and jog an entire warm up without feeling like my lungs are going to explode. Or grab a few miles outside on a perfect Fall day. I have no delusions of grandeur. But I keep thinking…if I can change my mind about this one thing that I’ve loathed for so long, think about all of the other things I could learn to love too.
I’m trying this 8 week running for beginners plan from Runner’s World. We’ll see what happens.
